France tightens measures after experiencing its worst case of bird flu last winter


France will step up measures to contain bird flu following a resurgence of the virus that swept through flocks of birds last winter, the department of agricultureadding that the national bird flu alert level had been raised to ‘moderate’ from ‘low’.

France experienced its worst bird flu crisis between November and May, with more than 19 million animals culled to stop a severe strain of the disease from spreading in major bird-raising regions in western France.

The government eased restrictions in June after a lull in outbreaks, before an unusual spike in cases over the summer that affected large numbers of wild birds in coastal areas, as well as some inland farm flocks. .

Other European countries have also reported new outbreaks of bird flu since the summer.
