Earthquake in Iran leaves at least 3 dead, says state television

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — At least three people were killed by an earthquake in southern Iran early Saturday, state television reported.

“Unfortunately, so far we have had three deaths and eight injuries,” Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, head of emergency management for Hormozgan province on Iran’s Persian Gulf coast, said in the report.

Iranian media said the quake had a magnitude of 6.1, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center put it at 6.0. The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, or just over six miles, the European monitoring group said. Tremors were felt in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Major fault lines run through Iran, which has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years.
