Coast Guard suspends search for 16 missing migrants after boat capsized off Florida during Hurricane Ian

The US Coast Guard has called off the search for 16 migrants who remain missing after their boat capsized off the Florida coast during Hurricane Ian. Two bodies had previously been recovered.

“Teams have suspended the search for the 16 missing persons pending further information,” the Coast Guard tweeted Sunday.

A boat carrying 27 Cuban immigrants capsized and sank Wednesday just hours before Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida.

Four of the migrants were able to swim to Stock Island, just east of Key West, the US Border Patrol said. The Coast Guard said Thursday that a total of nine people had been located and safely rescued. On Friday, the Coast said that two bodies: a near Ocean Edge Marina and a in the Boca Chica Canal—had been recovered.

“Going to sea at any time carries significant risk,” Coast Guard Capt. Robert Kinsey said in a statement Friday. “Going to sea during a hurricane is completely unwise.”

The storm earlier in the week killed two people in Cuba and brought down the country’s power grid.

Ian then made landfall near Key Coast, Florida, on Wednesday as a major Category 4 storm, the second-strongest possible category in the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
