Biden will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday

The long-awaited call comes as national security officials are quietly working to convince Pelosi of the risks her potential trip could pose during a highly sensitive time between the self-governing island and China. Sources familiar with the speaker’s plans say she plans to visit in the coming weeks as part of a broader trip to Asia and has invited Democrats and Republicans to join her. If she goes, she would be the first Speaker of the House to visit in a quarter century.
Bloomberg was first to report in Biden’s Thursday call with Xi.

Biden acknowledged that he planned to speak to the Chinese president during virtual remarks calling for passage of the bipartisan CHIP Act on Monday, telling reporters, ‚ÄúThat’s my expectation, but I’ll let you know when it’s ready. you know.”

Pelosi’s possible trip highlights concerns within the Biden administration about China’s plans on Taiwan, as Beijing has stepped up its aggressive rhetoric and actions toward the island in recent months, including sending fighter jets to the self-declared Taiwan’s air defense identification zone several times. US officials have expressed concern that such moves could be a precursor to even more aggressive steps by China in the coming months aimed at asserting its authority over the island.

Russia’s war in Ukraine has only intensified those concerns, as Biden and other top officials nervously watch what lessons China may be learning from the Western response to Moscow’s aggression.

Meanwhile, Xi is believed to be laying the groundwork for an unprecedented third term as president in the fall, contributing to tense geopolitics in the region.

Biden’s call with Xi was in the works before Pelosi’s possible visit to Taiwan was made public, officials have previously noted.
