Warriors’ Steph Curry on Brittney Griner pitching, why it serves as a ‘reminder’

The release of Brittney Griner from a Russian prison in exchange for a convicted arms dealer resonated throughout the sports world on Thursday.

Griner, an Olympic and WNBA champion, had been detained in Russia since February for bringing vape cartridges containing cannabis-derived oils through a Moscow airport. She was later convicted and sent to a penal colony before being traded for Viktor Bout in a 1 for 1 prisoner exchange.

While the reaction was intense and loud throughout the day, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry offered his take on Sports Illustrated. Sportsman of the Year Awards Thursday night.

“We’re glad he’s home, we’re glad he’s reunited with his family,” Curry said. “It’s a constant reminder to everyone who continues to use their platforms to speak out about issues that are meaningful and can move the needle. Thank you to the administration of President Biden for being a part of that fight.

“But it’s also a reminder that we must all remain committed to the fight to protect wrongfully detained American citizens at home and abroad, and we can continue to be involved in that fight. BG, we love you. We thank you for your sacrifice and your continued perseverance and patience in getting through this process, and I hope you enjoy being reunited with your family. We will always be with you BG.”

Curry also spoke about his launch on the event’s red carpet.

“It’s amazing that Brittney is home,” he said. “Obviously it was too long a process to get her back from being illegally and unfairly detained in Russia. I think one, a shout out to President Biden and her administration and all the athletes, activists, people who used her platform to speak about her. “I know there is now a conversation that will hopefully lead to protecting and speaking out about other American citizens who are still being held illegally abroad and knowing that there are still many families who are in a similar situation. This is great news that Brittney She’s home, excited to see her return to her family.”
