Kansas City had initially optioned Matheny for the 2023 season in hopes that he would have finished better than 65 wins during the regular season.

“We are grateful to Mike for guiding us through unusual times over the last three seasons,” Royals vice president and general manager JJ Picollo said in a news release. “He met those challenges head-on and helped us move forward in a positive way. We appreciate his leadership and know his influence will have a positive impact going forward.”

Matheny joined the Royals’ bench before the 2020 season but didn’t get to manage the team until mid-summer due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even with the playoffs expanded at the time, Kansas City failed to make the postseason as they posted a 26-34 record.
