NASCAR championship contender Alex Bowman to miss Charlotte race

NASCAR championship contender Alex Bowman will miss a second straight race due to a concussion.

Bowman was in the round of 16 of the NASCAR playoffs when he crashed in Texas. He told his team at the time of the accident that it was one of the hardest hits of his life. He then finished another 231 laps and was diagnosed with a concussion four days later.

Bowman missed last week’s race at Talladega and will miss the Charlotte Roval. Noah Gragson replaced Bowman last weekend and will do so again.

“As my health remains my number one priority, I will not be racing again this weekend in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway,” Bowman said in a statement. “I’m still making progress in my recovery to make sure I can compete 100% again.

“I appreciate Noah getting back in the No. 48 Chevrolet and I’ll be cheering hard for my Ally Racing team this weekend.

“Thank you all for your support during this time. It has not gone unnoticed or unseen and I am overwhelmed by your support.”

Bowman’s absence means he will be eliminated from the playoffs.

Bowman and Kurt Busch missed Sunday’s race with injuries sustained in crashes in NASCAR’s Next Gen car. NASCAR plans Wednesday to test some computer models of the changes that can be made to the rear of the Next Gen car, which drivers have complained is too stiff and causes injuries in what were generally considered routine accidents.
