Former 49ers tight end slams Jimmy Garoppolo’s ‘horrible’ performance

If Jimmy Garoppolo is going to keep playing like he did Sunday night in Denver, the San Francisco 49ers are going to be in trouble.

In his first start of the season after returning to his quarterback job after Trey Lance broke an ankle, Garoppolo completed just 18 of 29 for 211 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

He also ran out of the back of the end zone for a Broncos safety.

Denver wasn’t much better, but it did enough to bring home an 11-10 victory over the Niners.

Former Niners tight end Brent Jones has defended Garoppolo in the past, but there was no defense in Sunday night’s performance.

“I’m blaming… I don’t do this very often. In fact, I almost never do. Jimmy Garoppolo was horrible,” Jones told KNBR in San Francisco on Wednesday. “What the hell? When you’re a professional football player and a quarterback, you know where the back of the end zone is. That was so outrageous. Do you know how many times I’ve seen that from a veteran quarterback? 0.0 from a veteran quarterback, it’s just the worst.”

Jones was especially angry at Garoppolo’s reactions after the match. The three-time Super Bowl champion said Garoppolo shouldn’t be “glad to give up the other team” after playing a vital role in such a lousy loss.

THE BRONCOS DEFENSE COMES IN CLUTCH IN THE UGLY VICTORY OVER THE 49ERS

“I’ve never seen that from any quarterback, that’s been good,” Jones said. “Steve Young? No way. Joe Montana? Hell no. Brett Favre? No chance. Do you think Russell Wilson laughs after throwing an interception, walks out of the end zone looking for safety, he loses the ball and plays horrible and his team’s 1-2 and the reason why they lost the game?

“It almost seemed like he didn’t even care. It was very frustrating, and maybe he was just mad that the game was so ugly. If that’s me, I’m running for the locker room. I’m not smiling, I’m not talking to anyone for a week if you play like that. I just don’t understand his disposition, but that was really frustrating. The icing on the cake.”
