During the debate at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, O’Rourke and Abbott, a Republican, exchanged criticisms on a variety of topics, ranging from immigration and border security to inflation.

“It’s clear that Beto just wants to perpetuate open border policies and misunderstand exactly what’s going on,” Abbott said during the debate.

An 18-year-old Edinburg resident, who asked not to be identified, told Fox News that O’Rourke’s pro-amnesty stance for illegal immigrants appeals to her.

“They come here looking for, you know, sanctuary to seek a better life. It’s very supportive. You know, [O’Rourke is] I’m not letting anyone run free or anything. He expects them to follow the laws just like the rest of us. But that’s what they’re looking for. Being an American citizen,” he said.

And if we can have that, we can put that in place and have everyone do it.”
