Chuck Schumer tests positive for COVID-19, will work remotely when Senate reconvenes this week

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend as the Senate prepares to reconvene this week.

In a statement Sunday, Schumer’s spokesman, Justin Goodman, said the Senate will return to work after a two-week recess, but that Schumer will remain in quarantine at least through the end of the week as he is experiencing “very serious symptoms.” mild”.

The highest-ranking Democrat in the legislative body intends to work remotely while away from the chamber.

“Per CDC guidance, Leader Schumer will self-quarantine this week and work remotely,” Goodman said Sunday.

“Anyone who knows Leader Schumer knows that even if he is not physically on Capitol Hill, through virtual meetings and his signature flip phone, he will continue with his robust agenda and remain in near constant contact with his colleagues,” he added.

Schumer is fully vaccinated and has received multiple booster shots, the spokesman said.

“As we do every week, we will provide any Senate floor schedule updates as the week progresses,” he continued.

Schumer’s recent schedule included participating in the New York City Pride March on June 26 and attending a primary election event for New York Governor Kathy Hochul on June 28. She privately celebrated the 4th of July holiday with her family.

Schumer won’t be the only senior Democrat missing from the Senate, as Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) remains home while recovering from recent hip surgery.

Leahy was released from the hospital last week.

The Senate is ideologically split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, but with two Democrats missing from the House, Republicans have a temporary 50-48 advantage.

Schumer’s positive test comes as the omicron variant of COVID-19, and specifically its subvariant BA.5, has become the dominant strain across the country.
