Will Smith’s first movie since the Oscars slap will be released in December

Will Smith’s new movie “Emancipation” is due out in December, his first major project since he infamously slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in March. Smith posted a trailer for the film on his social media pages and called it “the hardest movie I’ve ever done.”

“Blood, sweat and tears… LITERALLY! Shout out to Apple who doubled (and tripled) their commitment to deliver this epic story to the world,” he wrote on Monday.

The film centers on Smith’s character, Peter, an enslaved man who escapes from a Louisiana plantation and heads north. According to Apple, the film was inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter”. One of the images, known as “The Whipped Back”, shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by the whipping of his slavers and proved instrumental in changing public sentiment against slavery.

“Emancipation” opens in theaters on December 2 and will be available to stream on Apple+ on December 9.

The film premiered at an advanced screening during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 51st Annual Legislative Conference over the weekend. NAACP President Derrick Johnson was in attendance and praised the film.

“I had the pleasure of seeing the film #Emancipation and I can’t begin to say how powerful this is for OUR community and OUR history. It’s a story of adversity, resilience, love and triumph,” Johnson he tweeted.

The announcement of the film’s release date comes more than six months ago. Smith slapped Rock onstage during the Academy Awards ceremony. Smith hit Rock after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Rock compared Pinkett Smith to the character in the movie “GI Jane” because she is bald due to a diagnosis of alopecia, which causes hair loss.

Smith publicly apologized to Rock, and the Academy announced that Smith would be banned from any of their events for 10 years after the incident. Although Smith also resigned from the Academy, he is eligible to be nominated and win.
