Trevor Noah starting

Trevor Noah has announced that he is leaving “The Daily Show.” The 38-year-old broke the news on his show on Thursday.

“I realized that after seven years, my time was up,” Noah said, to an audible gasp from the audience.

The South African comedian took over hosting duties on Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show.” in september 2015.

“I never dreamed I’d be here,” Noah said Thursday. “I felt like ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’ I walked in for a tour of what the previous show was, and the next thing I knew, I was handed the keys.”

Noah didn’t provide a timeline for when his last show will be, saying only that “we’ll find out the times and whens. We’ll still be here for the time being.”

Under Noah’s direction, the acclaimed show earned six Emmy nominations and one Emmy win.

“The Daily Show” airs on Comedy Central, which, like CBS News, is part of Paramount Global.
