Trevor Noah leaves ‘The Daily Show’ | CNN

“The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah has announced that he is stepping down from the anchor desk.

In a video statement shared on Twitter Thursday, Noah said that after seven years as host of the Comedy Central satirical news show, his “time is up.”

“It has been absolutely amazing. It’s something I never expected,” Noah said of his experience hosting the show. “I found myself thinking over time about everything we’ve been through. The Trump presidency, the pandemic, just the trip, more pandemic, and I realize that after seven years, my time is up.”

Noah, a comedian from South Africa, was a relative newcomer to the American public when he was named host of “The Daily Show” after Jon Stewart stepped down in 2015.

“I want to thank you guys who saw this,” Noah said. “I never dreamed I would be here. I feel like in ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’. I came here to take a tour of what the previous show was and then next thing I knew I was handed the keys.”

Noah hinted that his decision to leave the show is based on his desire to return to a more standup job.

“I spent two years in my apartment, not on the road, and when I got back there, I realized that there is another part of my life that I want to continue exploring. I miss learning other languages. I miss going to other countries and doing shows,” Noah said.

He expressed his gratitude to his viewers, the crew of “The Daily Show” and Comedy Central, “who believed in this random comedian that no one knew on this side of the world.”

“I loved hosting this show, it has been one of my greatest challenges and one of my greatest joys,” said Noah. “I’ve loved trying to find a way to make people laugh, even when the stories are particularly erotic, even on the worst of days. We have laughed together, we have cried together.

He did not share when his last show would be, but said that he would still be around for a while.

“Don’t worry, I’m not going to disappear,” Noah said. “If I owe you money, I’ll pay you anyway.”
