For the first time, Velma Dinkley from “Scooby-Doo” is officially coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. The iconic character, known for her witty intelligence and catchphrase “Jinkies!”, is shown in love with another female character in a scene from the latest film in the franchise, “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!”
In a scene from HBO Max’s new Halloween-themed movie, which opens Tuesday for rent or purchase on Amazon Prime Video, the gang meets costume designer Coco Diablo, who is voiced by actress Kate. Micucci.
Velma quickly loses her train of thought when she sees Coco, noticing the new character’s “amazing turtleneck”, “incredible glasses”, “brilliant” mind, and love of animals. Velma then says “Jinkies!” as her cheeks blush and her glasses fog up.
In another scene, Velma admits to Daphne that she is “in love” with Coco.
People have speculated about Velma’s sexuality in the past, but so far she hasn’t been portrayed as seemingly queer. In the past, the franchise’s producers and writers have indicated that the character is not straight.
In 2020, “Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated” producer Tony Cervone aware about Velma’s sexuality in a post for Pride Month.
“Obviously I don’t represent all versions of Velma Dinkley, but I am one of the key people representing this one. We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago,” Cervone wrote. “Most of our fans got it. For those who don’t, I suggest you take a closer look. No new news here.”
