Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson ‘Meet Cute’ in a ‘Groundhog Day’-style romantic comedy

Cuoco’s Sheila walks up to Davidson’s Gary at a bar, and the two spend a romantic night together to get to know each other, even if his behavior occasionally seems a bit odd. That’s before she explains that she has access to a time machine (located in her local beauty salon, for some reason), which allows her to travel back one day, over and over again, reliving and revising the first time. quote from her

Although Gary is understandably skeptical, he is also irresistibly attracted to her. “We just work,” Sheila tells him, a theory she can test, over and over again, altering the nature of their interaction in small and not-so-small ways and watching it unfold.

The formula is obviously full of potential, which explains why writers keep coming back to it, from “50 First Dates” to Andy Samberg’s recent movie “Palm Springs.” However, the concept is also fraught with danger, starting with looking vaguely cruel the longer the setting goes on (even in a 90-minute film) and the question of how to break free of the circle in some creative way, a challenge that “Meet Cute” (directed by Alex Lehmann from a screenplay by Noga Pnueli) can’t be beat completely.

“It’s okay for things to be messy sometimes,” Sheila tells Gary, a line that has some importance in the larger story, but doesn’t necessarily apply as well in this kind of exercise.

Having followed “The Big Bang Theory” with a breakout vehicle (for at least one season) in “The Flight Attendant,” Cuoco has proven her skills as a producer and star, and she is truly at the center of the story. As for Davidson, he’s found no shortage of movie roles, but the “Saturday Night Live” alum seems stuck in a different kind of loop, one that still makes him more famous for his off-screen relationships than his efforts. professionals.

Frankly, his team’s marquee value alone probably represents a modest victory for the NBC streaming service. That said, it would have been nice if “Meet Cute” had done a little more to capitalize on the attention, though as it stands, there’s no going back in time to fix that.

“Meet Cute” premieres September 21 on Peacock.
