Some things never change. Hocus Pocus is back with an all-new sequel nearly 30 years after the original released in theaters, but the cast of the Disney+ movie says the biggest change is that the movie actually has fans this time around.
“Even when it became a phenomenon, [a sequel] was not considered” Bette Midler saying entertainment weekly for an article published in early September. “Ten years later, when I started seeing the returns, I was shocked and started making calls. We didn’t get any interest and a few years later I remember I needed the costume and asked the studio to lend it to me but they couldn’t. My friend suggested that I go online, so I searched and was surprised because I have never seen so much. Hocus Pocus merchandise I bought the costume, and I came as Winnie here and there, for this or that benefit, and I realized that something was up.
The 76-year-old Emmy winner did not give up. “As he watched it progress, he would call the studio once a year to ask, ‘How’s it going?’ It wasn’t until about three years ago that they advocated for it and the movement started,” Midler revealed. “He picked up when they decided they wanted him to be on a streamer. They never looked back until they got their movie.”
The stars had no trouble finding their characters a few decades later. doug joneswho plays zombie Billy Butcherson, said it was surprisingly easy to go back to the grave.
“Billy came right back to me, it was scary how he’s been alive while I’ve been playing other characters for all these years,” the Oscar winner said. ew. “He was pretty decrepit to begin with, and I [come] out of the tomb looking exactly like two minutes had passed. I drank some formaldehyde. The prosthetics are exactly the same, makeup artist, Tony Gardner … It was exactly the same wig. They had it on a mannequin on display for 29 years, they put it back on my head in the same style, it didn’t need a touch up.”
The original Hocus Pocus The cast members who changed the most are the ones who were children when the franchise began, but won’t be returning for the sequel. that includes tora birch, who played 8-year-old Dani Dennison. “I was a little distraught that I couldn’t do it,” said the actress, now 40. entertainment tonight in September. “She was working on something else when they were filming…otherwise she would definitely be there on set with the girls.”
